How to Train for Size (Hypertrophy)

Hypertrophy training is not just about lifting until the muscle burns. It requires smart volume progression, controlled execution, and thoughtful exercise selection.
Rep Range & Intensity
Most people grow best using 6–15 reps with 60–80% of 1RM, which combines moderate load with enough time under tension. This range stimulates both mechanical tension and metabolic stress.
Weekly Sets & Training Volume
I usually program 12–20+ weekly sets for each muscle group to accumulate tension and fatigue in a controlled way.
Rest Periods & Tempo
Rest intervals for hypertrophy stay between 60–120 seconds, keeping the muscle under higher metabolic stress. I slow down the eccentric (2–3 seconds) and maximize the squeeze during the concentric.
Exercise Selection
Hypertrophy benefits from a mix of compounds for loading, machines for stability, and cables for tension through full ROM. Clients often see faster results when they combine all three.
